In January of 2011 my doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. I had already been dealing with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and extremely high triglycerides for many years, but the diabetes diagnosis is what made me realize something had to change in my life. If not, I would die at a young age like my mom and dad both did due to complications from obesity related diseases. My mom died in 2002 from diabetes issues and my dad died almost seven years to the day later in 2009 from cholesterol/triglyceride issues. I want to be able to see my daughter walk down the aisle and meet my future grandchildren.

In May of 2011 I met with Dr. Uchal and started the process that has changed my life for the better. On August 31, 2011 I had Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery done. Other than having my children and getting married this is the best decision I have ever made in my life.

On the date this after photo was taken it was nine months from the date I had my surgery. Have I reached my ultimate goal yet? No, but I have lost 118 pounds so far and I have gained so much more! I no longer have to take medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, or cholesterol. I am the healthiest I have been in twenty plus years. It also does not hurt that I like what I see when I look in the mirror. I’m even addicted to exercise now. My only regret is not doing it sooner.

My advice to anyone considering any type of weight loss surgery:

1. Do lots of research on your own and with your doctor.

2. Remember this is a lifestyle change as well. It is not some quick fix. You have to put some effort into your new lifestyle and pay attention to what you are putting into your body and exercise regularly. Your body will thank you.

3. Have support in place; it really helps along this journey of a lifetime.

4. Be ready for one heck of a ride and enjoy life!
